TO-DAY S FOOTBALL MATCH.
CHRIST'S COLLEGE V. BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. The annual football match betweer the first fifteens of Boys' High School and Christ's College will bo played al the Show Grounds, Addington, this afternoon. Probably on account of the fine football witnessed in inter-higli schools and inter-collegiate tournaments played in Christchurch last year, there seems to be more general interest centring in to-day's match between our two leading secondary schools. Both teams are fit and well trained and a most strenuous and oven contest is anticipated. All tho players have been weighed and College average slightly over 101b per man heavier all round, ihe ground should bo in good order as there is a sufficient turi on it to proi vide a firm foothold. Tho accommodation for the public could only bo improved upon i>y playing the game at Lancaster Park, where there are three grandstands, but the commodious stand *uid embankment at the Show Ground will ensure every spectator a good view of th* play. A rearrangement lias been made with regard to the entrance of vehicular traffic which will enter by way of the Whiteleigh avenue gate and not by the front entrance as previously announced. Play will commence at 2.45 p.m. TO THE EDIXOB OF "THE PBESS." Sir,—As an old boy of both Christ's College and tho Boys' High School, and having some knowledge of the difficulties which beset those who have to cater to produce the wherewithal to beep up the athletio sports, including physical culture, gymnasium, boxing, football, etc., etc., it always seems to mo a splendid opportunity is lost each season when the two schools fail to take advantage of the opportunity and collect the gate money and equally divide the same for tHe maintenance of their sports fund. My experience of schools is that the boys aro expected to put up a very brave show in all departments as advertisement for their institutions, but they got very littlo assistance, and there is a portion of the average public who take advantage of every patriotic movement to exploit these schools and the public schools throughout r the country. It is quite time it should be S two particular schools are largely responsible for tho men that are going to run this country in the near Future, and to provide each institution with an up-to-date man who can superintend tho coaching of their field sports who is himself an able gymnast, physical culturist, and an expert boxer are all points in the game that help to build up the rising generation, but they are branches that are sadly neglected, but should be departments that the most Bhould be made of. They largely govern the disposition of a young man s tuture. , , In oonclusion, while I do not grudge contributions to tho Lady Liverpool Fund or any other fund, ! take personal exception to the collection from these matches being diverted into channels ather than such as wil' directly benefit tho IRDTH „ |
