THE COAL MINES
TROUBLE NOT YET SETTLED.
(SPECIAL TO "THE PBESS.")
WELLINGTON, July 9,
There is no further news which is tiefinite or exactsabout the coal mines trouble. It is feared, however, tiio Government may be induced by tho power of the minors' unions to give the owners tne worst of the deal. Tiio position of th© miners is a very Btrong one at present. btocKs of coal m tlie country are lower tiian ever beiore, and in tuo cowl storui turouguout tne JL/olumiou tuere are nine uiunon pounds' woxtn ot perisnabie produce, tor wnich tne Government is largeiy, if not witoiiy, responsible. Tnat is no ligat responsibility.
It is certain that tho Government will uso some of its influence to bring about a conference between the owners anil the miners, and. tiiat will be a partisan interference against the bwners. "Wiietiier tile Government is prepared to insist upon a. conference if tne owners bLow determined opposition is a question tnat has not yot been reached in such deliberations as can have occurr«>d up to date. That question could arise ouiy after tho owners had been officially asked by the Government to moet the men in conference to discuss the demands made by the men, and nonsuch desire seoms to have been clearly expressed on behalf of the Government. If owners go to the conference and grant nothing of what the unions demand, the rxisitiou may be considered by the Government to be one of such danger that intervention is necessary. The Government seoms, for the present, to* have tho idea that a strike in the mines is not to bo contemplated. Tho owners have no such idea. There is a hint that if the mine-owners prove obdurate the Government is prepared to take ever the mines, but perhaps that hint originates from tho unions. It is a fact, at least, that the unions would like nothing better than Government control of tho mines.
