Mr H. W. Bishop, New Zealand's senior Stipendiary Magistrate, who has been S.M. in Christchurch since 1805, will retire from activc service on the Bench on August Ist. Mr Bishop, who K °, f th ® best kn ,o«-n personalities in •H " u lrch| w " s born at Tichborno. Hampshire, on March 12th, 1851, and iio is the son of tho lato Rev. A. C. ' Rector of Brandean. Mr Jiishop was educated privately, and arrived at Lyttelton.in January, 1869. He entered the Native Department in IoM, and soon afterwards became interproter to Judgo Manninng (author of .Old New Zealand"). He was attached to tho Nativo Land Court of tho Northera District in 1870. and in tho same year became clcrk and interpreter to tho Resident . Magistrate's Court at Hokiauga. He became Resident Magistrate at Mangonui in 1882, and in 1890 was appointed to tho North Auckland district. Ho bocame Magistrate in iNorth Canterbury in 1893, and became Stipendiary Magistrate in Christchurch in 1900. Since Mr Bishop's appointment to tho Bench in 1882 he has served 36 years without a holiday and without oven the usual Court holidays. His retirement from' the Bench will not affect his work ns Chairman of the Canterbury (No. 2) Military Servico Board, which is occupying a large proportion of his timo at present.

GISBORNE, July 8 Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.. has receivec notico of his retirement on superannuation, as from the end of the month. MR F. K. HUNT APPOINTED TO THE BENCH. Mr F. K. Hunt, well known jn legal circles in Christchurch, has beon apEointed a stipendiary magistrate, and o will take up his duties m the Auckland district in the near future. Mr Hunt is a barrister and solicitor of tho Supremo Court of New Zcfaland. He is a native of London, but camo out to New Zealand at an early age with his father, tho Into Dr. F. E. Hunt, who practised in Christchurch. Ho was educated at Christ's Collego and was articled to Mr J. C. Martin, boing admitted as a solicitor in 1891 and subsequently as a barrister. In his younger days he was a prominent athlete, and was particularly well known as a Rugby fuli-bock.
