SULTAN OF TURKEY. (By Cable.—Pr mm Association.—Copyright.) (Eeuter's Telegrams.) LONDON, July 4. Tho death is announced of tho Sultan of Turkey.

Mahomed V., Sultan of Turkey, was born in 1544. Ho succeeded Abd-ul-Ixamid 11., who was deposed by the tmanimous vote of the National -Assembly in April, ISO 9. Tho heir-apparent i,«j Prince Waliid-ed-I>in, who is 57 years of age.

The late Senator Tillman was born in 15"47. He was Governor of South Carolina in 1890 and 1892 and a United States Senatof for four terms, 1595ISIS. He was a noted educational reformer, and founded an Agricultural and Mechanics College for boys and a Normal and Industrial College for girls. He was the author of tho dispensary system of selling liquor under State control.

MR G. W. HORSLEY. Mr G. W. Horsley, a well-known resident of Christchurch, and a very old colonist, died yesterday, after a brief illness; aged 08 years. The late Mr Horsley arrived in Auckland in 1854. As a young man he was engaged in survey work undor the late Surveyor-Gen-eral, Mr Percy Smith, in opening up tho Hot Lake districts of the North Island, and had several strange experiences with the Maoris. Litter, he was engaged in the timber industry in the Bay of Islands, where he married a daughter' of the late Mr Samuel Stephens. Flo afterwards managed saw mills for tho Kauri Timber Co., in Whangarei, Mongonui, and Mercury Bay. He fame to Christchurch about 18 years ago, to join his brother, Mr T. N. Horsley, in tho brick business, and since then had been secretary of the Christchurch Brick Co. At the outbreak of-the war he took a keen interest in military matters, and joinod the Citizens' Defence Corps. He was greatly interested in all musical matters, and was an active member of the Christchurch Musical Union for many years. Ho was for several years a very prominent member of the Christchurch Savage Club, and last year filled Use office of president. He was also an enthusiastic bowler, Icing a member of the United Club. Mr Horsley will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends, gained by his kindly, genial disposition. At the funeral, which takes place to-morrow, members of the Christchurch Savage Club will act as pall-bearers from the residence of the late Mr * Horsley's brother to the Avonside Churchvard. The cortege will leave the residence at 2 p.m. As a mark of respect to Mr Horsley's memory, tho weekly korero of the Savage dub will not be held to-night.

DR. T. J. WITHERS. Dr Thomas John Withers, who died at Southbridge yesterday, was born in County Down, Ireland, 65 years ago, and educated at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast. From 1880 he practised for two years in the Belfast fever hospital, and he also practiced for two years at Comber. Dr. Withers came to New Zealand in 1885. when he began the practice of his profession at Southbridge. He had been a justice of the peace for some- years, medical officer in the Ellesmcre Rifles, a mem ber of the Southbridge School Coni mittee, and chairman of the Tow i Board. Ag a Freemason 'he was

Past Master of the Southbridge Lodtri and a Past Deacon of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Of late years Dr. Withers had been very prominent in, bowling circles.

Mr C. T Paterson fruit and produce merchant of Du>redin, died on Thursday, aged 65 years. He was for 6ome time president of the Knituna Bowling Club, and was a member of the Com-ini-rcial Travelers' Club. He was also well kiiown in Freemasonry.
