Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs Christie have returned to Wellington after a brief visit to Christclmrch.
Miss M. A. Alexander (Dunedin) is visiting Christchurch.
The Hon. W. Anstey and Mrs Anstey arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning from Wellington.
Miss Alice Scott (Park terrace) is visiting -Wellington.
The engagement is announced of Miss Sarah Tucker, youngest daughter of Mrs J. Tucker, of Spreydon, to Mr I. J. (Tom) Campion, only son of Mr !• Campion, of Ladbrooks.
Miss Ethel Martin, who has for some years past held a responsible position in the office of F. Cross and Sons, Ltd.,\ yesterday severed her connexion with the firm- She was the recipient cf several presentations, including ' a cheque from the firm, and a cheque, silverware, and other, gifts from the firm's clients, her co-workers, and personal friends. Miss Martin has received an appointment in the New Plymouth Borough Council's offices, which also enables her to rejoin her own family, who left Christchurch some time ago to permanently reside in New Plymouth.
The fourth of the Red Cross matches for this season was played at Shirley yesterday by members of tlio Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club. There were twenty-fire entries. Mrs Bichards was the winner, Mrs Murphy being second, and Miss Rita Cracroft Wilson third. The club also took the opportunity of saying farewell to W. lies, the club's professional coach, who is leaving to go into camp. Mrs Wigram, as captain of tho club, presented Mr lies -with a wristlet watch, and expressed the hope of all that he would return safely.
The weekly eale of flowers, sweets, home-made cakes, etc., in Cathedral square by tho city branch of the Women's National Reserve, resulted in £68 being added to the Lady Liverpool Trench Comforts Fund.
At the Young Women's Christian Association, Latimer square, on Thursday evening, Miss Waterston, who was for fivo years secretary of the Christchurch Association, was welcomed back bv a few old members and friends. Miss "Waterston is on furlough from the Solomon Islands, and is at present engaged on a translation of tho Gospels into the native language. Mrs Kaye, president of the Y.W.C.A., who, with Mrs G. Callender and Mrs A. F. Carey, members of the Board of Directors, was present, spoke warmly of the splendid foundation laid by Miss Waterston in the early days of Y.W.C.A. work in Christchurch, when conditions wore very different from those of to-day.
