MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.
MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY. A meeting of the Canterbury Microscopical Society waa held last night, Mr C. H. E. Graham being-in the chair. Arrangements for a social evening were discussed, and it was decided to hold the function on August let. ■ Mr W. W. - Collins, president of tie Rationalist Association,' gave a> very mteic«ting - lecture -on "Evolution.' - The lecture was" illustrated by a*large zinmber of lantern and microJanfcern eildes, the lantern being operated by Mr A. Noble. A hearty fi-ie of thanks wa& accorded Mr Collins at thfi conclusion of his address. RECBABITE ORDER. The half-yearly meeting of the Pride of Linwood Juvenile Tont, 1.0. R., waa held in tho Rechabite Hall on Wednesday evening. The District Superintendent, Brother E. A. I M. Leaver, duly installed the following of- | floors:—C.R., Sister M. .Walier; D.R.. BroI ther J. Mallett; eecretary, Sister-R. De-mp-|eey; Invite, Sister Nelmes; stewards, Sisters Mills and Mallett; guardian. Brother C. Kinley. Two new members were initiated, and prizes for the past term were presented to Brother J. Patterson, P.-C.R... and Sisteir, M; Walker, and F. Rattray. In presenting the prizes Brother Leaver referred to the "splendid record- of Brother P*ttison, who had already secured 20 members. Brother F. Cooley reported on tic football tecvm reoeotly formed in connexion with the Order. SOCIAL AT UPPER RICCARTON. In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was a laxgfe attendance in the Oddfellows'' Hall, Upper Riccarton, an Wednesday, on' the occasion of a welcome homo to Privates McKenzie, Chancy, Brake, Exton, Robertson, Kennedy, Divine, and Harris, of Roefton, also a farewell to Privates Smith, Savage, and Stewart. The function took the form of a concert, provided by the Upper Riccaxtcm. and SockbOrn Burgesses' Association. The chairman, Mr G. Forsyth, in opening " the concert, referred to the death of ' Sergeant' Lunn, of Riccarton, the audience standing in eynronthy with Mrs Lnnn and l family. Mr G. Witty, M.P., in welcoming liome the returned men, spoke in complimentary terms of the many good qualities ; of the Riccarton boys who had been, and were still at the front. Mr S. Staples, on behalf I of the" oeople, Addressed the men on leave, expressing a wish that.they would be spared, to return., An apology was read from Pn-. vat© Brake far non-attendance. During the evening items wore given by Mi* Machon, Misses Fox, Watt, Brackemridge, Hall, Philpotts, Wrisrht, Davidson, Jameß. MT P. G. Clements, Maßters Machon and Hnll. Mrs i A. Edmonds played the accompaniments.
