THE WIRELESS OPERATOR.
The chief engineer of the "Wimmera, Mr A. Pax ton, has referred in terms of admiration to the heroic manner m which tho wireless operator. Mr Arthur Bomont, remained at his post when tne disaster occurred. Other evidenoegoea to show that when last seen, Mr Bomont was entering his cabin, with the purpose of using his emergency apparatus m an attempt to send out an "S.O.S. some years Mr Bomont was a member of the first Northcote troop ot Boy Scouts, which ho joined soon after his arrival as a lad from Glasgow, where he was bom, and was attached for some time to the Boys' Bngaae. As a Scout leader his influence amongst his comrades was remarkable, and subsequently, when attached to the Torrttorialfe, his manly qualities and high sens® of honour made for him many friends. In the early stages of the wnr. Mr Bomont was wireless operator in the Talune, and he was subsequently engaged on various intercolonial steamers and vessels trading between Sydney ant/. Brisbane.
The following motion was carried at a meeting of the Seamen's Union, at Wellington, on Monday night: 'That this meeting of seamen regrets the unfortunate disaster to tho Wimmera, involving loss of life and extreme hardships to others of tho crew and passengers, and respectfully tenders the. relatives of thfe deceased the sincere sympathy and condolence* of the organised seamen." \ Huddait, Parker, and Co. have given £1000 to the Wimmera Relief Fund.
