FIRE AT HAWERA.
MITCH DAMAGE DONE. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TKIiKGBAHj HAWERA, July 2. Just a few minutes before 8 o'clock this morning, a fire was discovered in the back of the premises of Tait (chemist) and Taylor (draper), in High street. The brigade motor wbb soon on the spot and. found the fire had ; a strong hold, and, the buildings being old, spreading very quickly. Despite the splendid pressure of water and the absence of wind; Tait's and Taylor's 6hops were" gutted, as well as Gataran's (confectioner) adjoining. , Cry stall's tobacconist shop was badly damaged, and the top story over Cataran's andCrystall'a, used as a Red Cross depot, was completely burnt. The buildings all' belonged *to the Sutton Estate, and were insured for £1000 in the Standard Office; Tait's stock.and fittings for £500 in the Norwich Union; Taylor's for £1700 in the Phoenix; Cataran's for £345 in the -Standard; and Red Cross depot for £60 in the Phoenix. Crystall's insurance is not known. ' The fire was under control in threequarters of an hour, but much damage was done, and Tait, Cataran and 'the Red Cross are heavy loserß.
