The Tribute to France.

We are glad to learn from the Mayor's statement at a preliminary meeting of citizens held yesterday that liberal promises of support have been received for the movement set on foot for the benefit of the French Red Cross and other French "war funds. Arrangements are to be further discussed on Monday next, and a street collection is to be held on some date to be fixed, not later than July 14th, the French national anniversary. The amount of money that can be collected in New Zealand is substantial, and will bo of appreciable value to the beneficiary funds, but it is not in the belief that Franc© cannot do without such assistance from us that the movement has been organised. Rather it is desired to pay a tribute to the valour and spirit of the French nation, upon which the heaviest blows of the war are falling, and upon whose fortitude and tenacity the success of our cause mainly depends. Everyone should feel glad of an opportunity to join in paying tribute to the heroism of our battered but unshaken Allies, and we trust that those who are arranging this opportunity will act with such vigour and enthusiasm that the response of Christchurch. will be worthy of the occasion.
