COLOSSEUM RINK.

LAST NIGHT'S CARNIVAL. The cold and damp of yesterday evening found 110 answering chilliness inside the big Colosseum Skating Rink, where all was light and laughter and colour. The occasion was the first night of the big Poster and Fancy Dress Skating Carnival, which, in so far as the number of entrants is concerned, is the biggost event of its kind ever held in Christchurch, if cot in the Dominion. The hall, which presented a very gky picture, was brilliantly lighted with tho Wizard lighting system, which made the interior of the building almost -as light as day. Tho roof was hung with the fiaqe of many nations, and also with strings of bunting. And underneath on the polished floor a wonderful array of skaters skated and "two-stepped," and did all these evolutions which mark the proficient in this art. ■ There were Coons, and Spanish dancers, gipsies innumerable, mjrsoa, pierrots and their pierrettes, fairies, flowers, and gollywog, Bed Indians, Charlie Chaplins. wowsers, a Spanish cavalier, a frog, soldiers, "Miee America," and others far too numerous to mention. Not the least amusing was an elephant, which gambolled about in truly elephantine fashion. The posters also were very attractive, and many of them were cleverly carried out.

The seats were thronged with interested spectator®, who were invited to vote on various matters, such as deciding the pnze-win-ners, etc. The Grand MaTch took place at 8 p.m., followed by several parades. Then there was a two-step competition, a fan and balloon race for tho ladies, an egg and spoon race, and a waltz competition. The halfmile handicap aronsed much

The results of the competitions held iast evening were:—Musical choirs: Mr E. Moore 1, Mr S. Moore 2. Ladies' fan find balloon race: Mrs H. Eags 1, Miss Thornton 2. Half-mile flat race (gents): H. Greenbank, syds, 1; B. Crean, syds, 2; N. Robinson, 40yds 3. Ladies' egg and spoon rare: Miss J. Bryce (Cathedral Chimes) 1, Mis' O. Woodward 'Sherwood) 2, Miss D. Large (Adelaide Direct) 3. The fo'lowin? events will b-> decided to-ni?bt: —Gentlemen's hurdl? and potato races, waltzing competition, the mo3t graceful couple, arid a tive-arside hockey match between representatives of the Solwyn and Sydenham senior clubs. Voting for the best fancy drrss (l®dy and gentleman), poster dress (lady and gentleman), most comical character (gontlemen), and twoetep competition wi!] be concluded to-night, also the finals of all events.
