EXPLOSION AND FIRE.

DAMAGE AT SOCKBURN

Shortly after 9.30 last night a violent explosion occurred in one of the buildings of the Sockburn Distillate Company at Sockburn, and a fire broko out which did a good deal of damage before it was extinguished half an hour or so later. It is stated that a few men were at work in the building, arid as the company's work consists of distilling motor spirit from coal tar, all of which is Highly inflammable material, it is thought that a spark must have ignited stuno explosive vapour, causing the subsequent explosion and fire. None of tho men preseiit \Vas injiirod.
