BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (ilr F. Kibblewhite), Crs. P. Christian, J. Baxter, C. Israelson, E. A. Leaver, A. W. Owlcs, 0. H. Winr.y, R. Browning, and F. Sincock. Mr T. H. Strahan's application for a supply of spoil and metal was refused owing to a shortage of stock. The North Brighton Burgesses' Association wrote urging the Council to put in hand as early as possible the proposed improvements to Palmer's rood. In.reply to the South Brighton Burgesses Association, regarding the Council purchasing certain sections (3) giving access to Fox, May, and Sturdie streets, it was decided to state that at present the Council was not in a position to purchase the sections. Further correspondence frGm the Association, regarding tho re-naming of Estuary road and protecting against any portion of tho Reserve being given away lor road formation purposes, was received. _ The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board advised that the levy for the financial year was £405 5s 3d. Referred to tho Finance Committee. . A circular letter was received from the chairman of the Canterbury Progress league setting forth the aims and object® of the League and asking for the support of the Council. It was decided to reply that the League had the fullest Bympathy of the Council. . , The treasurer reported for the period endin" June 2Sth as follows: —Receipts £283 19s sd, expenditure £118 9s lOd, district fund account dr. £429 18s 2d, temporary loans dr. £3285. Fifteen building 'permits havo been issued to date, having an aggregate value of £2185. The report was adopted. On the motion of Cr. Browning, 6econded by Cr. Christian, the following resolutions were carried unanimously:— (1) That the negotiations between the representative of the C.ouncil and Mr Agar, for a further lease of the. New Brighton pier having terminated unsuccessfully, Mr Agar bo informed that it is the Council's iutention to ask the r;itepaj*ers for authority to raise the money nccessury to purchase his interest in tho pier, in accordance with ihe terms of the existing lease. (2) That tho Council take immediate steps to appoint an arbitrator to value _ the improvements in connexion with the pier buildings that have been approved by the Council for the purpose of compensation at the termination of the lease. (3) That a public meeting of ratepayers of the borough bo held as soon as convenient for tho purpose of discussing tho proposal to purchase.

SUMNER. | The Sumner Borough Council met last night. Present —Tho Mayor (Hon. J. Baxr, U.L.C.), Councillors H. G. Jamieaou, T. Dryburgh, R. Pierc.y, J. H. Gibbs, W. J. Lawson C. Benjamin, and T. E. Whitfield. The Chrktchurch Gas Co. wrote offering certain equipment for the gasworks plant. The offer was accepted. In 1911 the Defence Department gave the borough two guns, only one of which was brought to Sumner. Owing to heavy oxin removing the gun from Lyttelton it wus decided that the Council should surrender any claim to its second gun. The Works Committee reported that certain street repairs had been carried out, hut as the Halewell Quarries were not at the present time in a position to supply any metal, further repairs would be held over The work of forming a track to Shag Rock reservoir had been started, but had had to bo abandoned on account of the wot weather The report was adopted. The engineer reported that practically the whole of the sand had now been either xhrown out, or had been scoured out of the creek outlet, and the small quantity of sand whioh found its way in at the sluice gate after a heavy sea could now be dealt with. The only way to prevent the mouth of the channel from sanding up would be to run a stone wall in position. Anything in the way of curving the channel would reduce the effect of the flow. The report was received. Tho Mayor stated that so long as material was left over from the present electrical con- . tract any suitable application for an extension of the reticulation would receive full consideration.
