Major-General Maurice says:— "The importance of Germany's next effort hafl increased, because failure, following the Austrian defeat, will have most disastrous consequences. Germany's policy has been to conclude each year's campaign with showy success, therefore the Germans will be all the more careful in tho next attack. The West front pause meant that the troons behind the lines are not yet sufficiently trained."
