Sir Douglas Hoig reports:— "In successful minor operations in the night wo gained possession of a hostile stronghold at a point westward of Vieux Berquin, and captured a number of prisoners. "Hostile artillery has been active at different points between Givenchy and Robecq. Tho enomy gas-shelled the north-eastcm portion of Nieppe Forest." "A French, communique reports:— ' 'There were fairly lively artillery actions south of tho Aisne and in the region of Woevre. We carried out three raids in tho Vosges." A French communique reports fairly lively actions south of the Aisne, and in the region of Woevre. Raids were carried out in the Vosges. An American official message says:— "Our infantry, supported by artillery, attacked the enemy's positions southward of Torcy, and advanced our lines. "Successive hostile counter-attacks broke down with losses. "Our aviators during the night bombod railroads, stations, and yards at Conflans." WASHINGTON, June 27. The American raid on Belleau Wood resulted in the capture of 300 prisoners and eleven machine-guns. v THE NEXT PHASE. LONDON, June 27. Major-General Maurice says:— "The importance of Germany's next effort hafl increased, because failure, following the Austrian defeat, will have most disastrous consequences. Germany's policy has been to conclude each year's campaign with showy success, therefore the Germans will be all the more careful in tho next attack. The West front pause meant that the troons behind the lines are not yet sufficiently trained."
