AIRMAN'S HEROISM.
ATTEMPT TO SAVE A COMRADE AT SEA. Lieutenant Cecil O. Fedden, Indian Infantry, attached Royal. Flying Corps, was buried with military honours at Berwick early in January. While flyiutr over the sea on a Monday morning, ° Lieutenant Fedden's maclune nose-dived owing to engine trouble, and remained afloat tail up. He tried to swim ashore, but the strong current prevented him, and also bore away lifebuoys dropped by other aircrart Flight Commander Hodges and. his observer then with all speed went to the place where Lieutenant Fedden was clinging to his disabled machine: , . . The Flight Commander dropped into the ice-cold water, and, clinging to the .framework of the aeroplane with one arm, placed the other round the numbed and exhausted ainnan, who 1 soon after lost consciousness. Se held i Lieutenant Fedden tightly pressed against his body for warmth for threequarters "of an hour. Later both were rescued by a • fishing-boat. Flight Commander Hodges was quite exhausted, and almost unconscious by that time. Lieutenant Fedden, though living when he was brought to land, died of exhaustion, shortly afterwards.
