THE AIR WAR.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.! (Beuter'a Telegrams.) (Received March 23rd, 12.35 a.m.) LONDON, March 21. The Press Bureau states that, excluding the raids on Germany, British and Australian airmen on the West front during February dropped 5290 bombs in the daytime, and 553 at nighttime. Tho enemy dropped 28 in the daytime on areas occupied by the British and 17<iS at night-time. GREAT BRITISH RAID ON MANNHEIM. (Australian and N*.Z. Cable Association.) (Received March 23rd, 2 a.m.) PARIS, March 21. News from Basle (Switzerland) states that Monday's British raid on Mannheim caused enormous damage. Many houses in several parts of the town were ignited Explosions occurred in a powder factory and tho gasworks, and large holes were torn in the principal streets, holding up the tramways. Firemen aud soldiers were engaged many hocrs extinguishing the fires. The population are panic-stricken, a n;| there is constant anxiety, tEe people fearing further raids. Many people, especially women and children, are leav! ing for Switzerland and the south. The German newspapers continue their campaign against aerial reprisals but Berlin, owing to its temporary safety, refuses to negotiate with the Allies.
