RAM AND EWE FAIR.
FIRST PAY. The annuo', Ram and Ewe I-oir, conducted by thr» Coincrbury A. and P. Association, vas commenced yosterdaj at the Show (.Jrounds, A.ddingion, with the sale >>i' the Unci: r:nvts. Tliore was , a very large attendance '»t brooders ■ and buyers from almost, ail part© tbi> ; South island. At will be sejn from j ihe following list, the entries sliowca , a marked incroase. The rams, with . few exceptions, were in excellent con- r dition. as was to be expected from the ; i'nvournb'e tW-d conditions. 1: A:\IS. I
The increased number of English Leicester rams offered was probably not iound ill excess of requirements, as many of those passed at auction were sold privately afterwards, but Border 'Leicester breeders had over supplied the market. The large entry of Soiithdowns was duo to the loss of tho North Island market during tho past two years, where the longwool breeds arc in great demand. Tho best sale throughout was for English Leicesters, and it was probably a record for average prices. The demand kept up until about _ throefourths of tho entry had been disposed of, and then it eased off, and onl,v the better class of sheep -was saleable at the prices expected. The range of prices was 2',gs to 123gs, but most of the sales took placo at about 4£gs to 7gs. Mr J. Bonifaut (Ashburton) toppod the sale of the breed at 12Jgs, and Messri R. and J. Reid (Darfield) gold tho next highest-pricod rani at llgs. Mr J. 0. Coop River) obtained a splendid average, hig largo line making ogs to Mr Joseph Taylor (l'apanui), who is tho largest English Leicester breeder in the Dominion, besides sending 300 rams to tho fair, had disposed of about 270 privately. There was a keen demand for his sheep, which sold readily , at 4Jgs to SJgs. Messrs E. Kelland's aud I. Andrew's rams also sold well. Border Loicestors met with a disappointing sale, for although thore -jvas a good demand at the opening, it soon fell away, and prices with it. Messrs T. Blaekley (Rakaia), sgs to Bgs, and Alex. Gunn (R.icccourse Hill), 4}gs to llAgs, had the best salos. Bcwond tho RomnoyK sent in by Mr H. Daymond (Chatbams), which made 17gs, and Mr S. Andrews (Kaikoura), which realised llgs. the quality of the rams of this breed left much to be desired. Mr Ihiymond's rams are similar to North Island Romneys in their general character, and in fineness and density of wool, and as they were by Bidwill rams this is partly explained. There -was little demand shown for Lincolns, and Messrs R. and J. Reid's, which were the best brought out. mado 61-gs to 7g.«. Tho better class of Corriedales were keenly competed for, and Mr W. Mackj intosh's lot of fifteen Were taken at 21gs, tho top prico at the fair for flock rams. Messrs H. T. Little sold rams up to 13jgs, L. WTiito to 10gs, and H. Ensor to 91gs. Good half bred rams also sold "well, Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., selling his up to 12£gs, and Mr L. Wliito to Sigs. Shropshire wore .very difficult to dispose of, and the Bulk was paesod in. Sir Geo. Clifford had much the better sale, his consignment reaching 6gs. Southdowns met with the worst demand tho breed has over experienced in Canterbury sinwi it was introduced. There could hardly bo given away, and only a few lots wero disposed of at very low prices. The fair will be continued at 10.30 a.m. to-day with the sale of stud sheep.
