Mr "Will Thorne, the English M.P., sent the following letter to the Acting-Sc-eretarv of the Order of tne British Empire.—"Pear Sir,—ln reply to your kind letter of December 20th I desire (to sav that when, three months ago, the Prime Minister kindly offered mo au appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire I felt obliged to respectfully decline the honour. I now sen no reason, for coming to anv o f her decision. I believe it is the duty of every citizen to do his or her utmost fr> r the country during the war ori.si.s. Any scrvice of mino deemed worthy of notice v.as> not given 'u tlie hope or expectation of any regard or decoration whatever. —I remain, Jours very truly, W. Thorne."'
