HUGE TOBACCO PROFITS
Stupendous profits contiuuo to bo earned by tho British American Tobacco Company. In 1915-1G they advanced, nearly £-900,000, to £2,733,400, and the dividend was increased from 22J ppr cent, to 30 per cent. In the past 12 months they have risen to £3,105,000. The dividend, however, is not increased, being still 30 per cent., paid free of British income tax. The distribution could have been larger, but the profits are being husbanded. The directors place £257,200 to special reserve, and carry forward £2,520,700, which is subject to the excess profits duty for the year. This is an increase of £753,500 on the balanco of a year ago. The directors say that, during the year the factories in England wero largely employed in supplies for tho troops abroad at a reduced rate of profit.
