Fitzalan Hope (Lord of the Treasury) stated that 3236 officers and men of the Kut garrison had not been heard of since General Townshend's surrender. The authorities state that they are practically certain that all tho men died during the hundreds of miles' march across tho desert, where no provision was made for food, shelter, or medical treatment. All the men were very iveak owing to the privations due to the siege, and many were suffering from dysentery. Doubtless they fell out on the march and died by the wayside. About one-fifth were British. All efforts to get information from the Turkish Government had failed.
