Lieut. Eric Reeves M.C., of the D®, fence Headquartere Staff, returned to Wellington last night. The Mission Board in Sydney advises that the Rev. J. 11. Suckling, of rhe Cau-rsham Methodist Church, Dunedin, has been appointed to the circuit (Yiti Levu, Fiji). Mr Maurice Ralph, advance representative of the Ada Reeve Company, has arrived in Christchurch to make arrangements for the Christchurch season. with which the New Zealand tour of the company will be opened. At a meeting of the committee of the Lytteiton District High School last evening. Mr R. B. Clarke, headmaster of the Pleasant Point District High School, was unanimously recommended for appointment as headmaster in place of Mr E. U. Just, who is retiring from
iiho servico at the end of this month. Sir William Culleu, Liout.-Governcr and Chief Justice of New South Wales, and Lady Cullen, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning on their way to Mt. Cook and the Southern Lakes. It is thoir intention if possible to do the Te Anau-Milford •walk. During her visit to New Zealand Ladv Cullen intends enquiring into the Wed Cross work of the Dominion. Red Cross work being one of her mary patriotic interests in New South Wales.
At the meeting of the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last night, the chairman, Dr. C. Morton Anderson, on behalf of \he members of the Council, presented Mr ,7. S. Maiu, the Society's chief ranger, 011 the occasion of his marriage, with two Morris chairs. In making the presentation the chairman expressed the hope that the chairs would recall the satisfactory relationship between the Society and Mr Main. The jtiftwas suitably acknowledged by Yr Main.
Tho Hon. G. W. Russell will arrive in Christchurch this morning, and will go on to Dunedin by the midday express. To-morrow morning tho Minister will leave Dunedin for Invcreargill, where he will open a new St-. Helens Hospital. On Saturday ho will return to Dunedin, remaining there over Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday ho will comp to Christchurch to attend the conference to be held here in connexion with tho treatment of consumption. | The Minister will leave for Wellington on Wednesday evening.
Captain C. S. Wright, who came into prominence as a member of the Antarctic expedition undor the command of. the.late Captain Scott, has boon awarded the Military Cross (says the Toronto "Globe"). Ho has been in France since tho outbreak of war, with tljo Scottish Wireless Corps of tli9 Royal , Engineers. In November, 1915, lie was awarded by the French Government thq i Cross of the Legion of Honour. Cap- ■ * tain Wright is a graduate of Upper J - Canada Cpllego and the University of'?' Toronto. After lie gradated lie w»jj> a lecturer at Cambridge University,? .Then he went to the Antarctic with;• I Captain Scott. News has been received by relatives in New Zealand that Dr. Eric Corkill, of Qripntal Bay, "\Vellinpton, has received tho Belgian Croix do Guerre. T)iis is tho third decpration, as he already wears tlie Military Cross and tho Or<3er of Leopold, «>f which he is Cheyalier. The London "Times" of Jqnujiry 11th gives the official account of the sorvico for which ho was awarded the former, as follows: —"Military Cross: Captain Thomas Frederick Corkill, H.A.M.C. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a forward hearer party. Ho worked continuously for four days under heavy shell-fire, evacuating tho wounded arid setting his men a magnificent example of courage and disregard of danger. Ho personally led p®Pr tics beyond thp advanced aid posts to collect the wounded, and his great zeal a lid energy enabled him to overcorao very serious transport difficulties.' When last heard from, T>r. Corkill was serving on the Italian front.
