His Excellency the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool will spend this week-end in Dunedin. Mr Justice Herdmrn returned from the West Coast last evening. The Hon. T. M. Wilford, accompanied by Mr C. Matthews, passed through Christchureh yesterday on his way from Wellington to Invercargill, to inspect the reformatory prison there. Captain Stewart, Dr. Smith, Lieut. Bowron, and Captain Whitmore wero passengers from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. Further leave of absence was granted Mr V. Burgoyne at last night's meeting of the Drainage Board, tho Mayor (Mr H. Holland) stating that Mr Burgoyne was progressing nic.'ly towards rc-eove.y. Mr Burgoyno oxpeets to bo able to attend the next meeting of the Board. Mr E. J. Allen, manager of the Nelson branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will retire from the service of the bank in about three months' time, after a connexion with it tbat has extended over 44 years. He joined the bank at Greymouth in 1873, and during his service in ■ connexion therewith, haa lieen stationed at twelve of its branches. He was appointed manager at .Ross in and has occupied similar positions at Opunake. Fei'ciing, New Plymouth, and Nelson. Mr Allen will be succeeded at Nelson by Mr A. L.L T. Jones, of AshImrton, who is a son of Mr Alfred Jones, manager at Nelson, about ol> years ago.
