CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Council of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr C. H. Hewlett, president, in the chair. Mr F. H. Sandall wrote that he would be absent from the Dominion for about six "months, and left the matter of leave of absence or resignation in the handß of the Council. Leavo of absence was gTantod until the end of tho financial year. The "Workers' Educational Association having asked thiit a member should give an address at one of their meetings, tho matter Vae left for the president to arrange. The president reported having telegraphed to th© Minister of .'."riculture that it was important that the Government should immediately atato its intentions regarding next year's wheat crop. His action was approved. A letter on the same subject was leceived from the Oamaru Chamber. TVia Automobile Association wrote asking support in tho matter ol minimising tho danger at the Styx railway crossing. The letter was received. Mr J. O. Jameson wrote suggesting that the Chamber interview ihe postal authorities with regard to arranging for a revised edition of the Postal Guide to be issued. Enquiries to bo made into tho matter. Acknowledgments of the resolution regarding German colonies were received from the Prime Minister, the Oamaru, Taxanaki, Gore, and. Auckland Chambers of Commerce. The General Manager of Railways wrote signifying his willingness to meet a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, 21st in&t, at 2.30 p.m., when it is hoped that the members of the Chamber will attend. The District Traffic ilanager wrote on the matter of storage charges, which wm referred to the Special Committee dealing with railway matters. The II ok:tiJui Horough Council forwarded resolutions with reference to the Arthur's Pa«s tunnol, and it was decided to reply that the league, with which the Chamber was «o c-oBQly associated, 13 now dealing with the matter. Mr F. E. Jones forwarded his resignation m representative of the Chamber on the Bojml of Governors of tho Technical College. Mr Jones agreed to act until the end of the financial year. A letter was received from the Commercial Travellers' Association with reference to lavatory accommodation on the Methven train. Referred to the Special Railway Committee. Tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce forwarded a resolution that it was of opinion that a Minister whoso main portfolio ehould be commerce should be appointed. It was decided to support the resolution. The Minister of Finance having replied to the_ letter on tho matter of taxation, it was decided to write again urging that a Royal Commission be appointed, as it would take time to formulate the amendments.
