• — RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Bt 'Looker-ON."> After acceptances had been recehed last evening, there were twenty-three horses left in the Great Easter Handicap, and fifteen in the Great Autumn Handicap, and there is the promise of a good field in each event; though theie will 110 doubt be a further reduction when final payments are made on March 27th. Biplane, has been withdrawn from both events, and Fiery Cross is at the head of the list in each event, with Croesus next to him in the Great Easter Handicap, and the New Zealand Cup "winner, Menelaus, second on_ the list in the Great Autumn Handicap. Hymoslra and Nanna have been withdrawn from the Great Autumn Handicap, but have had their engagements continued in the Great Autumn Handicap. Although a report comes from the North Island that Parisian Diamond will compete in the Jiaster Handicap atr Auckland, he has been paid up for in the seven-furlong race at Iliccarton, though he has been taken out of the Great Autumn Handicap. The general entries promise well, and there should be interesting contests in the Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes. The following horses, belonging to Mr E. J. SVatt, have been shipped to Sydney, in charge of X. Peters: Wolawa, Pontoon, All Aboard, First Rain, Pershore, a colt by "Wolawa —La Notte, a gelding by Wolawa—Tatters, a filly by Wolawa—Blacking, a filly by All Black —Muskerry, and'a filly by Hymettus— Idee. Two more shipments will be made in the near future. T. Quinlivan, now manager for Mrs M. A. Perry, was recently asked to put a price on Demosthenes, and the replygiven was ten thousand guineas. Jt is believed that the prospective buyer represented a newly-formed stud in the AVairarana district. The. Wanganui District Committee lias suspended H. foung's jockey'; license. Just when Polydamon had won hi: first race in New Zealand —the Christ mas Handicap, at Auckland —our Lon don correspondent tells us that a re. viewer of events in "Sporting Life' had described the horse as "one of th( most disappointing of the younger division of hurdlers." He is said always tc have had a "kink'' in his temper, -'ant the change from flat-racing to jumping failed altogether to have the. desired effect of reforming him." He did contrive to win a race when he was handled so resolutely by Ernest Piggott, "that he was given 110 chance of throwing up the sponge. This was accomplished by taking the colt to the front some distance from home, and keeping him so thoroughly on the stretch that none ot his rivals was afterwards allowed to get him. At the first spring Meeting at Newmarket, Polydamon was entered for a selling race, which he could not help winning, and having made this further contribution towards his cost and keep, he was allowed to change hands ana was sent to New Zealand. Whatever he may accomplish in that country, his departure from this will never be seriously regretted." At a sale of thoroughbred stock, held on account of Mrs M. A. Perry and Mr E. J. Watt, at Hastings, last Saturday, the prices were very much in favour of, buyers. The top price of the sale was 71 guineas, given by Sir James Carroll, for the two-yoar-old filly Thebes, by Demosthenes—-Stresa. (Br "Searchlight.") Mr H. Brinkman will declare the ■ handicaps for the New Zealand Metropolitan T.C.'s Easter Meeting on, Monday. A. Fleming is keeping the three-year-old trotter Pieter Timmerman in work, with a view of racing hint in the near future. The Canterbury Park track is providing good going at the present time.
