RED TRIANGLE DAY.

THE Y.M.C.A. APPEAL. IIIE CURT?'; CHUKCHI STREET COLLECTION". i2J 4 REALISED. '" Jlocl Triangle Day" dawned yesu-i----l.iv in no very promising manner, anu, n fnt-t. a suov.er of rain fell during he morning, but this did not damno-.i h.-: enthusiasm of those nsvociuoil ritli the appeal, and towards r.l''-itt.-rnoon tliev were rewarded with t'it !{,*i en ranee of bi iirln. chct?ry sunlig'it rhidi must have indircctly netted n onsiderable slim for the organisation Throughout the day the buttons, boLi: or contributors of over 10s and undm hat amount, soid readily—in fact, tin ■espouse of the public to the direct •fpeal for money was probably the most juiiercus and spontaneous ever accorded o any similar effort in this city. I >rac ;" .icaily by midday it was indeed difficult to espy pedestrians minus ii e amiliar lied Triangle sign. Tlie Cham>er of Commerce hall, the lieadquar:ers of the campaign, was a scene ot ntense and ordered activity. _ Around ;lie loom were boards on which the 'bunts" were marked out. While clost: jy stood a flentiful supply-sol bulv :a!Ioi-tors. readv to go "on duty. ' N'carlv a.i the "St. Joim Ambulance :Vs.sociatioivs collectors were there, tnd under the vi-rv able direction ot Vfr (J. J. Tieleaven, taey and others, lumbering two hundred and thirty 111 tJi, i-amcd out their duties in a lighiy satisfactory manner. Many i oletTtors who had undertaken to work 'or a specified time became so imbued ivith enthusiasm that they "carried jii" during the whole day, and it ivi>s isserted tnat oue elderly lndv who sailed forth with her box at 8 a.m. jtterl.v refused to yield it up until the conclusion of the day! Several gontiemen, headed bv Mr A. F. Carey, iiad their hands full during the wliok :lay dealing with the constant stream if money uisgorged h" the collectionboxes, and the staff of the Bank r,f VeiV South Wales very lcindlv checked all the receipts. 'ihe Bank's total i-ariod from ilr Carey's only in »he matter of pent-?. Very much appreciated refreshments were provided ill the hall, under the direction of Mrs E. M. Hunter. Mrs R. Jones and Mr V. Beck had charge of the buttons, find lid good work m distributing them tc jollccfrors. The utmost onthusiasm prevailed among all the workers, who Jid splendidly throughout, and when, ot about 10 p.m.. the total collected ivas announced to be £1244 7s Id, expressions of delight were numerous. ■ Mr C. M. Olhvier, chairman of _lir ;oniffiittce. stated to a representative "The Press" that the whole of the Bed Triaugle campaign had been a great success. A marked feature of it had been in direct giving, no monev coming in from stalls and that kind of attraction. The spirit of givintj and giving willingly had evidently caught the public. As there had been such a great rush of contributions. the secretary and treaurer had been unable to cope with the work, and there would probably be somo delay in the acknowledgment of private subscriptions. As a street collection, vestordny's effort was a record, nB the largest previous effort, the "Our Dnv" collection in 1916) resulttd Vn; follows. Street collection £084. stalls £720. The largest amount collected in one box yesterday "'as £37 9s. Subscriptions are coming in freely from the country, from which a very large total is expected. A feature of the campaign has been the generous response of the schools. The members of the South Waimakariri River Board, who paid a visit of inspection yesterday to tho part of Ihe river below tne Empire hridc-e, decided to vote £10 10s towards he Y.M.C.A. War Fund.
