Company's steamer Breeze is to load sheep at letone to-day for discharge at this port. Tho Pstiki, which has been delayed at Timani owing to shortage of labour, will not arrive here until to-morrow. Tho To Anau arrived at Lyttclton yesterday with a load of sheep from the Chathams. She will load cargo to-day for Auckland, sailing to-morrow. . A very heavy eea was running along the j east coast of tho South Island last we<sk. The sea wm exceptionally rough at Otago Heads. A large steamer left Port Chalmers on Tuesday evening, March sth, in charge of Pilot Duncan. As tho sea was too rougn, the. pilot launch did not leave her berth as is 'usual to bring the pilot back, and he went on to tho next port of call by the steamer, returning to Dunedin by train two days later. It is stated (saya~Hie Dunedin "Star") that this is the first occasion for the past ten yesurs that such an occurrcncc has taken place owing to tho sea being too heavy at tho Heads for tie pilot to be transferred to the launch. ... , Tho old wooden steamer Antrim narrowly escaped being lost in Lake Wakatipu recently. She was lying alongside tho old town wharf, and it is surmised that some person—probably a mischievous lad got down into tho ves3el and turned on the tap of a servico pipo which has its inlet from the lake and its outlet in tho engine • room. A steady llow of water continued to run into the engine room and adjacent quarters all day, with the result that the Antrim commenced, to settle down. Her parlous plight was not discovered, till 5.30 p.m., by which time her port holes wero about three inches below the surface of tho lake. The alarm was immediately given, and pumping operations wero hastily est in motion, .tour men were engaged on the task till 10 p.m., by which time tho "veteran" was salved. Jiad another hour elapsed before her condition was observed she would have foundered. Though out of commission as fa* as passengers service and freight are concerncd, tne Antrim, which is close on fifty years old, is useful when repairs are being made to the wharves or to hor sister craft.
CARGO FOR VANCOUVER. COMPANY EXPLAINS POSITION. In connexion with the request of the Council of tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce that more space should be reserved on Vancouver boats for New Zealand cargo, letters from the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward wore received at the mooting of the Council, both Ministers stating that they would be pleased to do all they could in the matters (says the "Herald"). Sir Joseph said that the matter really resolved itself into the question of whether tho steamers could be held longer in New Zealand, and a very largely increased subsidy .given. The president eaid that the manager of the" Union Steam Ship Company had confirmed what Sir Joseph Ward had said. The cargo that had been loaded at Sydney in tho emaller ves6al was insignificant because she could load her capacity, 2300 tons, in. the time allowed in New Zealand. With the larger vessel the position was different, because ehe could not load 4300 tons in the time allowed. About 1500 tons had to bo put aboard licr at Sydney, but this cargo was not all Australian, being usually southern allotments that were Bent for loadin to Australia instead of Auckland. It therefore appeared that New Zealand cargo was getting all the allotments in the Jul! •vessel and about SO to 85 per cent in the larger one.
