WOOLSTON BOROUGH.

ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR.

Considerable interest centred round the election of a councillor to fill the vacancy on tho Woolston Borough Council, caused by the death of Cr. W. J. Trerise. There were two candidates, Messrs Charles Hill and David Rowse. Mr Hill is reputed to have Social-Democratic sympathies, while Mr Rowse is a staunch conscriptionist. Some 50 or 60 people gathered outside tho local Oddfellows' Hall when the time for the announcement of the result of the contest drew near, and it appeared from current remarks *hat the return of Mr Rowse was little in doubt. This opinion was found to be correct, when, shortly after 8 p.m. tne following result was announced:— D. Rowse ... ... 372 Chas. Hill 183 Informal ... ... 5 Majority for Rowse ... 189 Mr Rowse, after the result had beet announced, briefly addressed tfoe bystanders. He expressed thanks for his victory, and said that the fight l ad been a fair one. Tho poll showed, he contended, that the feeling of the people was for standing by the Empire in this present crisis. He added: ' I am a Britisher, and I am proud to bo so. It ('referring to his return) shows that Woolston is not behind in loyalty to the Empire. So far as the Municipal Chambers are concerned, I shall devote myself to municipal enterprise, and to political and other controversies that havo no bearing on the borough I shall give short shrift. The Municipal Chamhers should be used solely for tho municipal enterprise of the borough. I thank you kindly for electing mc." Two polling booths were used, one at Ashbourne street, and the other at tho Oddfellows' Hall in Ferry ronJ. At both of these Mr Rowse secured a substantial majority.
