THE YPRES SECTOR. AUSTRALIANS MAKE RAIDS. The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, March 12. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—Eastward and north-eastward of Mcssines the Australians made successful raids during the night. A number of Germans were killed and taken prisoner. Our casualties were light. APPEAL FOR REINFORCEMENTS. (Reuter's TelcgTams.) WASHINGTON, Marcli 12. . An earnest appeal has been received from France for more fighters. ENEMY GUNS BUSY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Reuter's Telegrams.) (Received March 13th, 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 12. A French communique states:— "Fairly lively bombardments are in progress on the right bank of the Mouse, in the region of Reillon, Ancerviller, and in Lorraine." Another French communique states: "There is an intermittent artillery duel in the Argonrj,o and in the Vosges, but the firing is violent in Champagne, especially in the region of iho heights and in the Woevre.
"The- Americans carried out a successful raid south of Richecourt. "Six enemy aeroplanes wero brought down and another was badly damaged." WAlt SECRETARY'S VISIT. (Australian and N.Z, Cable Association.) (Received March 13th, 11.5 p.m.) PARIS, March 12. Mr Newton D. Baker (American Secretary of War) arrived aboard a cruiser which was part of a convoy of 10,000 troops. A false submarine alarm resulted in some firing.
