DISASTROUS CYCLONE. (By Cable. —Preis Association.—Copyright.) BRISBANE, March 12. A cyclono completely destroyed Babina, and almost demolisned Cairns. Tho damage is colossal. All telegraphic communication with the north is cut off.' So far one death and 17 hospital cases have been reported. STRIKES IN 1917. SYDNEY, March 13. Tho Commonwealth Statistician states that there were altogether during 1917 444 strikes, embracing 173,970 workers, and causing a loss of 4,689,316 working days, and a loss in wages of £2,641,735."
QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS. (Roceivcd March 14th, 1 a.m.) BRISBANE, March 13. The State elections have been fixed 'for March 16th. The abolition of the Legislative Council is the main issue. The Nationalists oppose the Ryan Government's socialistic policy, and propose to co-opcratc with the Federal Government in its efforts to win the war. The Government, if returned, will 'take it that the people want the abolition of the Legislative Council.
