PRICE OF HIDES.
ATTITUDE OF FAT CATTLE BUYERS. (SrECIAI, TO "the tress.") WELLINGTON, March 12. It has been reported that, in some parts of New Zealand, buyers of fat cattle are anticipating the reduced prices to bo allowed for hides under the new requisition scheme for hides from this country, by reducing the prices they arc paying for l'at bullocks by as much as £1 per i head for a beast of 8001b weight. If this is true, it is very unfair. The reduction in pricp which is proposed by tho Imperial Government is lid per lb, and as tho hide of such an animal would average about 701b, a fair reduction would bo about §s per head. It has not vet been decided that the reduced scale*is to como into operation at oneo. Mr Mnssey is asking that tho date, of commencement shall be postponed until after tho close of tho present export season. If this suggestion is acceptable to the Imperial authorities, the price of stock in Now Zealand should not bo affected during the present season.
