BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEW BRIGHTON. Tho New Brighton Borough Council met last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhite), Crs. C. H. Winny, A. W. Owles, E. A. M. Leaver, J. Buxton, C. Israelson, F. Sincock, R. Browning, and F. H. Christian. The Mayor was appointed to represent tho Council on tho deputation to interview the Minister of Public Works regarding the speedy completion of tho Arthur's Pass tunnel. Letters were received from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon, W. i\ Maesey, and the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph vVard, regarding tho disposal of German Samoa at tho conclusion of the war. Both assured tho Council that they would endeavour to prevent tho return of Samoa to so dangerous and unscrupulous an enemy as Germany. The District Health Officer reported upon an inspection of tho North Now Brighton district. He laid special stress upon tho bad disposal of household water there, and recommended tho Council to immediately consider a scheme of underground drainage to take in the whole boTougb. It was decided to ask the inspectors to take action in every case where a breach of the by-laws was discovered. It was agreed to support tho application of tho South Brighton Burcesses* Association for a slot telephone at the corner of Estuary road and Richmond terrace.
A letter from the South Brighton Burgesses' Association regarding- the removal of an old building to South New Brighton was ■referred to the Sanitation Committee. The Hon. T. M. Wilford advised that ho was looking into the question of granting a Government subsidy of £ for £ up to £'200 on the amount raised by tho recent gala at New Brighton for beach improvements, and would communicate with the Council later. A letter from the Education Board regarding tho rent of part of Reserve 1579 was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr E. Elliott was appointed cattle ranger for the borough. On the recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided to erect etreet names on Dennett street-, Beach road. Crcddock street, and Beatty etreet; to ercr* temporary fences to prevent wheeled traffic using the new footoath on tho Esplanade north; to call tenders for delivery cf next year's supply of metal, and screenings; and to cover footpaths in tho South Brighton loan area with screenings for a. width of Sft from tho kerb.—Adopted. It was decided, provided Mr Standen pays half the cost of construction, to kerb and asphalt tho path fronting bis property on Racecourse road, and to engage Mr N. B. Jobansen to erect a detention yard for cattle, materials to be taken from the Domain. _
It was agreed to ask th© Finance Committee to consider the erection of new offices. Tenders for the erection of conveniences at North Brighton were received, and it was decided to accept the tender of G. Ij. Bull, subject to the approval of the Health Officer. Cr. Owles rawed the question of the lease of the Pier, which expiree in October next. It wa« decided to hold a epecial meeting at a later date to deal with tho matter. It was decided to refer tho question of the erection of a hoi6e trough in Georg® street to the "Works Committee, with power 'to act ; 'also the question of claying around the pavilion at North New Brighton. It was agreed to give final notice to the owners of unfenced sections on Bowhill road to fence their frontagee. The treasurer's report for the period ending March 11th showed the TOceinU to have boon £359 Os 4d ar.d the expenditure £207 1b °d. Building permits had been iseued to the'value of £930. The general account was stated to be in credit £522 15s Id. and the temporary loan account iu deb:- £lica.
