SIR JOHN MADDEN. (By - Cable.—Prets Association.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, March 11. JEh© death is announced of Sir John MJadden, Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria The late Sir John Madden wasLieut.Goveraor and Chief Justice of \ ictoria. and Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. Ho was born m Ireland in 1844, and arrived in Victoria in 1857. He graduated in arts and law at Melbourne University, where he was the first student to take the LL.D._ degree. His political career began in ISr4, when ho was returned to tho Legislative Assembly for West Bourke. From 1870 to 18S3 ho represented Sandridge. He was Minister of Justice in tho McCulloch Government from October, to Mav, 1877, and in tho Sorvice Administration of 1880. He was appointed Lienfc.-Governor in 18S9. He was knighted in 1893, created K.C.M.G. in 18'JD, and G.C.M.G. during his visit to England in 1008. He wa s president of the Victoria division of the National Defence League.

GEORGE VON MEYER. (Australian and X.Z, Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, March 10. The ex-Secretary of the Navy in Mr Taft's Cabinet, George von Lengerko Meyer, has died of tumour on the liver. George von Lengerke Meyer was born at Boston on Juno 24th, 18oS. Ho was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiarv to Italy in 1900-O, and to Russia 1905-7. He was PostmasterGeneral in tho Cabinet of President Roosevelt, and Secretary of the Navy in tho Cabinet of President Taft. Mr James Shiel, whose death is reported by cable, came to New Zealand over thirty years ago (telegraphs our Duncdin correspondent). A few years later he joined the firm of Messrs Nimino and Blair as a partner. .1 his connexion lasted till eleven years ago, when ho left New Zealand to live in retirement in Dublin, where he kont open house for all New Zealanders in khaki. Mr Shiel served a term as president of the Otago A. and P. Society. The death occurred in Wellington last week of Mr Frank Pattullo, _ a widely-known and highly-rcspecTes farmer of tho Poverty Bay uis-trict. He left Gisborno a few days previously to receive special treatment for his eyes, and news of his death came as a great shock to his wife and friends. Doceased. who was 48 years of age, had resided in Poverty Bay for almost 18 years. He was born on the Eassio Estate, in Forfarshiro,' Scotland, and came to the Dominion to manage an estate in the Otago district. iSeven yoars later he went to the Gisborno district to take control of the llangatira estate on behalf of the Glasgow Bank Assets Co., and when that property was subdivided he purchased" a portion of it. Later ho secured the Tarndale property at Mangatu, and only recently purchased the property of Mr W. C. Ensor, who had decided to take up his residenco in Napier. The late Mr Pattullo married a daughter of Mr R. Sherratt, of Swathmoor, and had one son. His: only brother—Mr P. Pattullo—resides at Newstead station, Hawke's Bay.

An old and very highly respected Auckland resident, Mr Henry Nelson Garland, secretary and treasurer to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, died on Friday. Deceased was for the past twelvo months granted leave of absence from his duties. As a matter of fact, Mr Garland's leave on full pay expired on February 28th last, and he had already dictated his resignation, but was not well enough to sign it. Mr Garland was the second son of the late Rev. J. N. Garland, formerly incumbent of St. John's Jamaica. He was born in London in 1841. and landed in Nelson in 1857, where for a time he was engaged in sheen farming. Ho went to Auckland when the Thames .goldficlds rush began in 1867.
