Horn, marine superintendent for the Union Co.- at Xjyttelton, hae taken temporary command of a cargo vessel. Mr T. Wigton, late third officer of the Maori, has tninsterred to the Mapourika,, in a, similar capacity. Captain Sewell ia to take command of the M&pourika. The Blackball Coal Co.'setcumer ivgatoro is due here to-day, with a. load o£ sheep irom Napier. The coastal steamer Defender, which haa not visited this port for about twelve months, is expected to arrive here to-day with a load of sheep irom. Wanganui. LIGHTING- THE COAST. Mr T. A. H. Field, MJ„ has received the foilawing letter from the Hon. T. M. Willord (Minister of Marine), in reference to the request for a light on the Ninepins Rock made to him during his recent visit to. Nelson: —"Adverting to yoarr letter of the 27th November last, and to the deputation which waited upon me a*' Neteon on the subject of the erection of a. light on the Ninepins Rock near tho Chetwode Islands, I have now to inform you. that I have brought the matter befccro Cabinet, and it has been decided that provision for a suitable automatic aeetone-aoetykme light will be -considered when the Estimates are being framed and submitted to Parliament, for next year's expenditure, and that if " the money is voted the of erecting the light will be proceeded with. ' As regardsTory Channel, in view of the fact that there are now leading lights at the entrance and also a light on Diffenbach Point, at the junction of Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound, and that there ie great need for economy during the war, the question of electing further light® in this channel roust stand over for the present."
A -DANGEROUS PRACTICE. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, March 8. Evidence taken by the Marine Department at the inquiry into the cause of the explosion of benzine fumes on board the steamer Huia recently, showed that there had been smoking on the vessed, the explosion resulting from fumes coming in contact with a lighted pipe, cigarette,. or match. The Horboar Board by-laws prohibit smoking on vessels laden, with dangerous goods.
