CONGREGATIONAL UNION.

YESTERDAY'S SITTINGS. The Annual Conference of the Congregational Union was continued yesterday. A devotional service was conducted at 10 a.m., by theJßev. H. J. Ralph, and the business session, presided over by the chairman, opened at 10.30. The Rev. W. H. A. Vijkery (of Trinity Church, Lower Aww) was admitted anil welcomed as a inmisteruu member of tiiu Union. Mr G. E. Franklin presented tiicCanterbury District report, and the ltev. \\. -M. Grant rcau the report of the Otago District. Tho Registrar's report showed a small Increase in church membership, and a slight decrease in Sunday seiiool scholars. The Sustentation I'und report, presented by -Mr F. Meadowcroi't, indicated that the provision of a minimum stipend had received consideration. ~ . Tho lion. Geo. Kowlds read tnc 25th annual report of the I'a store Provident Fund, which showed that during the last eight years the fund •had uoubled itself. The ltev. A. E. Hunt read tho military report. The opening of the United Institute at the Featherston and Tauherenikau Camps was the event of the year. Mr Hunt emphasised the good work being done by means of these institutes, which provide the channel for' united work by the Presbyterians, Congrcgationalists, Methodists, Baptists, Y.M.C.A., and Church of Christ. Tho Rev. G. H. Eastman mentioned the deep gratitude of the contingents from the Cook Islands, who trained at Narrow Neck Camp, for the ready holp given to them by the Congregational friends in AucklancL The Council adjourned at IJAo In adopting the military report the Council decided to raise an additional £200 for military work. The Rev. A. Hodge presided over the evening gathering. A short address was delivered by the Rev. Eastman, of Itaratonga, and then a young people's demonstration, jy the United Congregational Sundayschools, entitled, "Christ s Jewelled Crown," was given. The leader was Miss A. Dawber, and the first part was entitled "The Gold for His Crown. In this nine boys told how the gold was secured and prepared for His Crown, and of the more precious gold of character from which tho Crown of Christ is formed. Parts wore taken by the'following boys:—Raymond Buxton (gold refiner), Cedric Jones (assayer), Walter liamb (escort),.B-awei "VVillunson (goldsmith), Alex. Struthers (gold miner), Don. Lorrimer (gold finder); Harold Taylor (gold washer), Norman Wilkinson (gold crusher), Ronald Farrant (cyanide worker). The second part, entitled, "Tho Gems for His Crown," was performed by twelve girls, each of whom represented one of tho jewels. The leader read a passage from Exodus 28, verses 15-21, on which the demonstration was based, and it was shown that each jewel symbolised a gift or virtue by which Christ's Crown is adorned. Parts were taken by:—Gladys Boyco (rubv), Phil Dawber (topaz), Mary Lindsay (carbuncle), Hope Job (emerald), Muriel Bunt (sapphire), Maggie Stewart (diamond), Elizabeth Stewart (ligure), Winifred Martin (agato), Rubina Fraser (amethyst), Martha . Marshall (beryl). Alice Harcourt (onyx), Phyllis Wilkinson (jasper). To the accompaniment of suitable ceremony each representation of a jewel borne by those taking part, was placed m a large crown. Throughout the demonstration choruses were given by scholars of the United Sunday-schools. At its close a hymn was sung, and the Benediction pronounced. To-dav the Union picnic will be held in the Domain Gardens, near the Tea Kiosk, and to-morrow special services will be conducted in various local churches.
