LICENSING COMMITTEES.
1 CHKISTCHURCH. j The quarterly meeting of the Christchurch' Licensing Committee was held yesterday. Present: Messrs T. A. B. Bailey, S.M. (chairman), C. E. Salter, T. C. Field, K. Matheson, H. B. Gould and Dr. Tnacker, M.P. . The following transfers were granted: Oxford Hotel, W. G. Ives to R. J. Paxil; United Service Hotel, Joseph Mandel to I\ 31. Drewitt. Mr Cassidy appeared in both matters. Mr Beswick applied for the postponement of the committee's order respecting alterations at the Empire Hotel. The license expired in August,"and it would be unfair to ask the licensee to incur, the expense of £80 involved in making the alterations, especially in view of legislation imposing 6 o'clock closing. Mr Ward, for the owner of the premises, agreed that it would be inequitable to ask the present licensee to effect the alterations. The chairman said that the committee would require a guarantee at the annual meeting that the alterations would bo effected. The application was ordered io stand over till the annual meeting in June. The chairman stated that a report from the police regarding the circumstances connected with the death of a man at the White Hart Hotel would stand over for consideration at the annual meet-in tj. SELWYN. The quarterly meeting of the Selwyn Licensing Committee, called for yesterday at Rakaia, lapsed for want of a quorum.
