SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
« MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the South Rakai Road Board was held yesterday. Ther were present—Messrs H. J. Harrison (chaii man), A, J.. Magson, and J. Lambie. A apology far' Tibaence wae reoeived from M A.. Urummond.. The clerk reported that a patch of Cali forniun thistle had made ita appearance o; a reserve at the cemetery, but had bee: eradicated. Work had been done- dirrin, the month on the Rakaia-Mitcham, Mitch axe Ashburton Main River road, Thompson' Track, and the township roads. It was rc ported that very many roads in the distric required patching ,dn account ' of "pot holes." Some work had been held over t release men to assist with harvesting. Th sum of £605 lla was due for outstanding rates. A letter was reoeived from Mrs Stervensoi isking that a disused race Baker's roac be filled in. It was agreed to attend to th matter. Alterations in the roll were authorisec :rom Thos. Morland to E. S. Leversedge ind from Miss J. Cliffe to F. T. Hunt. It was agreed to provide a better wate: rapply at the Board's house near the pound It was reported that a horse had been im jounded, kept for a considerable time, anc hen sold for £1. The total expense* imounted to £3 16s 6d. A letter was read from the secretary ol he Ashburton Hospital and Charitable Aic Board with reference to the making of sani ary by-laws. Some ycar3 ago the Rakau ioad Board delegated to the Ashburtor Hospital Board authority to make such byaws, and a set of by-laws was recently prelared. They were, however, of such a natur< hat the Rakaia'Board opposed their operition, and wished to withdraw the authoritj ;iven to the Aahburton Board, whoso secrcary wrote: "1 wish to point out that yon annot legally withdraw powers transferred o this Board under the Health Act, as hero is no machinery providod in the Act indor which they can be revoked.'' It was itatcd, however, that the by-laws would b< leld in abeyance. The Ashburton County engineer wrote: In reference to pipes near saleyards this rossing is a good one, and only recently hinglcd. The Council supply 20ft for crces. ng in the centre of the road, any further sngth to be paid for by applicants who lave complied with the Council's resolution e maintenance, and I am not aware of his having been dono by your Board." It ras stated that the Road Boaid would pay or an extra ten feet of piping. Surprise was expressed by members that he Council was moving in. the matter of his crossing before threo much more im>ortant crossings on the Main South road iad been attended to.
