WAIPAEA COUNTY ROADS.

spj TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Hi V mum> congratulate "Viator" and bravery, and fine m making uncomplimentary P 8 recommendations kk gainst the members of the Waipara Council, and for the courage he tl ' s P' a y®d in not signing his name to remarks.. _ Th© councillors should

without doubt, although they are busier ruen than "'Viator,'' give considerably mote time and attention to county council matters than they do, ou account of tho high salary they draw from the county funds. And even in harvest time they ought to sccure labour, even if they have to pay 2b 6d or -5.s per hour to keep the roads that lead up to "Viator's 1 ' place, and persons of his kidney, in perfect repair, in, spite of the fact that they spend much of their , time tearing up the roads with their motor-cars. Nothing should mar tho pleasure of these "lords o: creation," as "Viator," even iD the midst of this, the most terrible of wars. The gathering in of the harvest is of secondary consideration, compared with contributing to the pleasure and comfort of "Viator' in maintaining at all times a perfect road to his abode. In fact, if it can't be done otherwise, a regiment of soldiers must be returned front tho front to keep it in order. With "Viator s 'l agree, that there is absolutely no excuse for the new Council not having all the roads in tip-top order, seeing they have been in office for five weeks, and at a time when there is such an abundance of labour about, in such a slack season of the year as shearing time and harvest time is.—Yours, ctc. KOTATV.

SUMNER TRAMS. TO THE EDITOR OF ' THE TRESS " Sir, —I was much astonished to read in your paper this morning of complaints about incivility of conductors 011 the Sumner line. As a constant traveller to and fro on this line, X must say, I have never found the conductors anything but civil and obliging. The women who complain should leak nearer home, and 1 mend their manners when addressing conductors. X have often wondered how the men control their tempers when women speak so rudely to them.—Yours, etc.. A SUlVlivEll WOMAN.
