IMPERSONATION CHARGE.
NEW ZEALAND SOLDIER
SENTENCED
(By Cable.—Press Association.— vßccciv.ed March Gth, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. March G. Joseph McAulifle, who pleaded guilty to forging a document by means of which he obtained military payments to which lie was not entitled, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
The Judge added: "The Now Zealand authorities desire that you bo returned to England from whencc you deserted, as soon as the military authorities are ready to send you. I have made a recommendation that you be handed over to them."
Joseph McAulift'e, alias Josepa Henrv Turner, was charged with obtaining the sum of £2 Irom the Defence Department by means of certain falso representation at Sydney on January 4th. 'I he accused, in a statement made to a member' of the Garrison Military Police, admitted having enlisted in N'cw Zealand on December 14th, 1914. He sailed for England as a member of tho New Zealand Military Forces in April of the following year. s'-iome time after arrival in England he became an inmate of several" convalescent hospitals, and »vaa afterwards detailed to proceed to tho front. The night before he was t<> have sailed he met a driver in tho \ I F., Herbert Win. Maxwell, win had been to the front and was booked to leturn to Australia on the following dav as wounded. McAulirfe secur<?<l possession of Maxwell's papers, an-1 went, on board a transport, gave Max'velTs name, and left for Australia. On his arrival in Sydney accused went with other returned soldiers to the Anzao Buffet, signed himself as Drirei Herbert Win. Maxwell, and obtained an advance of £2. He then received 21 days leave, and disappeared. Driv.-r 31 ax well is still in England, wounded
