AVONSIDE BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

$ ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Avoiieido Burgesaco' Association was held last evening, Mr W. J. Jenkins presiding. In presenting the annual report, the secrotary stated that tho membership had do-"" creased from 76 to 50. The balanoo-eheet showed a credit of 18e 4cL Tho report iind balance-sheet were adopted. Tho chairman said it was not through joining the city that the rates of eomo of the property-holders in the district had gone up; it was due to the Heathcote County Council deciding upon a revaluation of the district beforo it amalgamated with Greater Cliristchurch. Ho contended that the levying of tho rate in the city of Christchurch must bo ics<3 than it was in the Heathcote County, the sanitation rate being the cause 'of-the extra figure. An attempt had been made to secure a reduction in. the fire insurance rate, but "the underwriters refused to reduce it upon tho ground that the district was not connected with tho high-pressure water supply. An attempt was being made to secure a firo station at the corner of Linwood avenue and Buckley's road. Regarding tho special tramway area, a committee of residents had been appointed, and there might be a test case in the courts, though thoy might hear of favourable news stopping it. Ho hoped the incoming executive would do its utmost to help the Drainage Board in its scheme for extending the drainage area to embrace Greater Chrietchurch, for there was nothing the district wanted moro than an effective drainage system. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr v.". Hill; president, Mr W. J. Jonkin; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Yarwood, W. Trethewey, and A. Ronnie; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. H. Milner; committee, Messrs J. Fletcher, S. C. J. Stinear, !M. Clark, D. Dumphy, L. Brian, L. Armstrong, W. Legge, G. Hart, and J. L. Stinear.
