Router's, correspondent at British ieadquarters 6tates: — "Between St. Quentin and Polygon {Vood there were six enemy raids on Friday night, also two enemy attacks. Particular features of the raids were he intensity of the enemy barrages, the promptitude and volume of our own irtillery in response, the almost exjlusive use of the rifle for ropulsing the jssailants, and the disinclination of the picked German troops to press home their attack. "The "biggest attack was against the Portuguese, on a front of 3000 yards between the La Bassee road and Marquissart, in which a whole enemy battalion assaulted after a whirlwind bombardment. Fierce hand to hand fighting occurred, bu„t a dashing Portuguese rounter-attack caught the enemy, still grips, in the tronches. "The raid upon the Australians was preceded by a terrific bombardment, but was brilliantly repulsed. The attackers numbered 200. Their principal point of,attack was a little post. The garrison made a valiant defence, but the anemy carried it and passed on to company headquarters, where a counterattack, organised by the platoon commander scattered the Germans. During tho raid calls were made in English by the raiders for help, one coming from the commander, who was found dead. When the position was restored, twentyfive enemy corpses were found hanging to the wire." NAVAL AIRCRAFT RAIDS. (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) (Router's Telegrams.)
