It is reported that Captain Bloom, who has. had command of the schooner Lily for the past 28 yeare, has signed off tho vessel's articles, and gone ashore. Mr C. E. Bell, chief engineer of the Kokiri, has gone ashore and his place has been taken by Mr J. A. Patterson. Mr S. Brown has joined the Mararoa. as radio operator. Captain J. W. Crotty, of the Huia has signed off, and his . place has been taken by Mr A. S. Moys, late mate on the Tutanekai. Mr Hening- has joined the Pateena as purser. The steamer Wootton sailed on Saturday for Wellington, whence she will proceed to the Sounds to pick up another load of sheep for Lyttolton. There has been a tendency on the part of Rome people to be indignant over the holding back *by the authorities of the news concerning the Wairtwa and Matunga, Speaking to a "Post" reporter on Saturday, Captain Macindoe, secretary of the Merchant Service Gu;M, said that, although he Tvas not permitted to state the reason for tho withholding of the news, he considered the Government was quite justified in doing so. EAST COAST SERVICE. | According to a statement made by Mr S. i R. Sleigh, local manager of the Union Steajn Sliip Company, the freight shortage which | has been holding up the inter-island bu«rine?s will shortly be relieved. During tho present fortnight five steamers, including one Hud- • dart-Parker boat, will leave for Auckland and Gisborne. These boats will have an approximate capacity of 70,000 sacks, which will do much to relieve pressure. As to future prospects Mr Sleigh could make no definite forecast, THE WAIRUTTA'S COMPANY. The Wairuna's articles were signed in Australia, and consequently many of the crew came from thorc. Very few of them aro known in New Zealand. Tt is understood (aays Friday's Dunedin ''Star") that tho Wellington-owned coastal steamer Huia is about to transfer her activity to iouthorn waters, and will probably fnter the Dunedin-Invercargill trade. Should these arrangements be carried out, the Huii will make the fourth -vessel which is to bo employed in this service. The Huia was purchased some months ago by Mr J. Brewer, of Wellington, from Levin and Co. Up to quite recently she had been employed in the Wellington-New Plymouth service. She is an 'iron vessel of 127 tons gross register, and was built at Auckland iu 1878. Her principal dimensions nre:— 113 ft 2in, breadth 16ft, and depth Sft Tin.'" THE PUTIKI SLIP.
