BANDS' DAY.
OVER £130 REALISED. The South Island Bands Association some timo ago decided to erect a memorial rotunda as a tribute to bandsmen who have fallen at the front, and on Saturday a street collection was organised for the purpose of raising funds. All day long a willing army of lady helpers solicited small donations from passers-by, while during the afternoon and evening martial music met the ear every few minutes. The various Christchurch bands, including the Lyttelton Marine, Tramway, C.1.C., Woolston, and Derry'y marched from their various headquarters to the Square, where a lar"e platform had been erected, and plaved selections which were much appreciated until nearly 10 o'clock. During the evening the Mayor. Mr H. Hob land, briefly explained the objects of the movement. As a result of the dav's collections the sum of £131 10s lOd was forthcoming, which must be considered v°rv satisfactory. Considerable praise is duo to the secretary, Mr T. F. Hall, for the manner in which he carried out the various arrangements.
