MR P. C. WEBB, M.P.
« THE SHADOW OF MILITARY SERVICE. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, March 1. It is possible that tho result of the Wellington North by-election may have somo effect on the plans that Mr P. C. Webb, M.P., has had in mind for his future. If Mr Holland had been returned the Socialists would havo moved heaven and earth to get Mr Webb exempted from military service. They would not have succosdcd, but in their attempts they would havo mado a lot of trouble lor the Government, and probably also for tho poople of this country. Tho wisdom of tho policy of the Government in refusing to give Mr Webb opposition when ho resigned the Grey scat, and so denying him an opportunity to have a contest on the issue of whether ho should go to the war or not is now apparent. Mr Webb still says that ho will not bold his seat and go to tho war as well. This may mean that he will resign his seat for the second time and manoeuvre again for a fight.
