At tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morn* | ing, before Messrs L. A. Stringer and' C. T. ! Middleton, J.IVa, Thomas Henry Field (Mr I Hunter), appeared on remand charged with j attempted criminal assault. Senior-Sergeant j Jackson, who conducted tho caeo for the i police, stated that accused, who was 19 i years of ago, haxi assaulted a girl between 14 and 15 years of ago on the Zisf-Zag road on the ISth instant. The complainant gave cvidenco that she was walking along the road between Lyttelton and Sumner at about 5 p.m., when sho met accused, who was 1 carrying a gun, with which ho had been j shooting rabbits. Accused, witness stated, assaulted h©r ar.d attempted' to commit an .] - offence; and threatened to shoot her if she 1 5 called out. Dr. Patterson, af Sumner, etat- J r o<l that on tho day in question tho girl was ] brought to his surgery for examination. Her j - condition appeared to bo quite normal, and j > thero wore no indications that she was tin- ] ? duly excited or had been tampered with. Detective Qir.irtermain said _ that accused r made an admission confirming the girl'* 3 statements, nnd later, in the of witness and Constable Joyce, mnde and bith--3 ed a statement (produced) admitting tho r facts. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved £ his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail beinsr allowed, 1 self in £100, and two sureties of £100. each. r SEAMAN'S FALL DOWN HOLD. . William Kelly, a seaman engaged on the Westport Coal Company'o collier Canopns. , whilst engaged in fastening a batten slipped , and fell into the hold, crushing his right s thigh on some iron bars. On being removed to tho casualty wprd his injuries were attended to by Dr. Newell. The man's condition had not improved last evening.
