MOTOR SMASH IN SYDNEY.
EX-CHRISTCHURCH RESIDENT
INJURED.

SYDNEY, Fobruary 20
As tho result of a motor smash in the city Mr Duncan, formerly manager of Warner's Hotel, Christcliurch, was, with two other members of the party (Miss Egan and Mr Rust) seriously injured, whilst a fourth member, Miss Ivy Allen, was killod.
Mis 3 Allen and Miss Egan, both talented musicians, have been engaged as violinists in the orchestra of the Hotel Australia for about four years. They had been playing at a function at tlio Australia on Monday night, and at tho conclusion, Mr Rust and Mr Duncan arranged to see them homo in a motor-car.
Mr Rust occupied the driver's seat, and after leaving the building drovo along Park street. When on tho incline near William and Yurong streets, tho driver seemed to loso control. Gathering momentum as it travelled the car crashed into a verandah-post of tho New Zealand Hotol, at tho cornor, while going at tho rate of about 30 miles an hour. Tho car turned a complete somersault, faced the direction from which it had come, and fell on it 3 side.
The four occupants were thrown heavily to tho roadway, and rendered unconscious. Miss Allen succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission to the hospital.
Mr Rust showed no signs of improvement yesterday, and his condition is regarded as critical.
Miss Egan is practically out of danger, while Mr Duncan is reported to bo progressing favourably. Miss Allen -was a well-known violinist. _ She had lately been ono of Mr Cyril Monk's most promising pupils, and was also a member of Mr Nicholas Gehdo's ooncert company, with which she had played at several concerts.
