CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING
The quarterly meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, the president, Mr C. H. Hewlett, in the chair.
The president's address dealt largely with railway matters, his remarks being printed in full in another column. Other subjects dealt with were: The German colonies in the Pacific, taxation, Arthur's Pass, tunnel, trade, and the natural resources of the Dominion.
On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr R. Hill Fisher,, a motion, on the question of the German colonies in the Pacific, similar in effect to the resolution arrived at by the Navy League, was agreed to; and it was further decided to ask other Chambers of Commerce and local bodies in Canterbury to pass a similar resolution. Mr C. H. Ensor brought up several instances of the inequity of the present taxation system as agecting farmers, and it was decided to reaffirm the resolution on the subject of taxation, arrived at at the anual meeting, and to ask the Government for a definite reply to the request that a Royal Commission should be set up to go into the whole matter.
The following members were elected to the Chamber:—Messrs C. Lord, W. E. Munday, W\ R. Devereux, W. H* Pardej-, and J. M. Smith.
The president was accorded a voti» of thanks for his address.
