In the supreme Court, the appeal of Robert Hannah anl Co., boot maiui- i facturers, "Wellington, against their con- j viction for employing a reservist not enrolled under tho Military Service Act, was allowed. It was admitted at the hearing that J Scaile, the man concerned, was unrcgis- j tered, but defendants contended tnat i they complied with the Act by taking i all reasonable precautions to see that I r.o unenroiled man was employed. Scaile ! told Hannah and Co. that he was a re- ! turned soldier, and displayed a certifi- l catc of discharge from the iorces on 1 account of medical unfitness, 'i'l.e Magistiate found that defendants honestlv believed that Scaifc was eligible for "employment, bnt held they did Dot have reasonable grounds for that belief. He suggested that the Government Statistician should have been communicated with. . His Honour, in his judgment said, in bis opinion, the appellants had taken all reasonable steps. Accordingly, the appeal would be upheld. As the original action W2s brought by the police, he would not allow costs. THE FIRST SNEEZE IS THE DANGER SIGNAL.
