BOROUGH COUNCILS.
V ' KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi Borough Council mot last night. Present—Tho Mayor tMr J. H. Blackwell), Councillors W. Doubleday, J. Bryden, K. Dunn, J. W. Crawshaw, A. Blakeley, J. \V. Barnard, and L. B. Evans. It was directed that a letter of sympathy be sent to the relatives of Private IDuiiel Lewis (wounded) An application from S. E. Evans for a refund of half rates on an unoccupied property in High street was granted. It was resolved to support tho Canterbury Automobile Association's resolution urging upon the Government the necessity of improvements in the method of warning traf&o at the Styx railway crossing. On the motion of Councillor Crawshaw, it was decided to draw tho Government'i attention to tho dangerous railway crossings in tlio Kaiapoi borough at High and Black streets, and tho need of an improved system of warning at these points. The Fire Inspector, in reporting on tho recent fire in High street, stated that the defective sounding of the firebell waa responsible for tho poor attendance of members of tho brigade. He recommended that a new bell be procured. The Fire Prevention Committee was asked to report on the matter. , __ , Vacancies in the Lighting and works Committers, caused by the resignation of Councillor Leithead, were filled as follows: — Councillor Brydon, chairman of the Lightin" Committee, Councillor Crawshaw, member of the Lighting Committee; Councillor Dunn, member of the Works Committee. The receipts since last meeting were stated to be £15 7s 4d, and the overdraft at the bank £687. N
