The early birds had all the best of tho conditions at Riccarton yesterday, tho weather being mild and calm. Battlo Eve gave further evidence of improvement by finishing ' well over seven furlongs, with Thestius as a mate down the straight. Comely made good time over the same distance, and she is fast getting into form. Margcrine, looking in the best of health, did a circuit without being asked to exert herself. Wardancer ran six furlongs comfortialy, and his stable mate, Disdainful, covered the same ground at something approaching her best form. • Harlequin was stopping at the end of a mile, Majcstiko/f joining in over the : lost six furlongs. Finland Maid went • well in a sprint -jyith Carol Singer. ' Jeannot, with Tyne as a mato for six \ furlongs, was stretched out for a mile, but-was stopping at the finish. ' Ascalaphus ran six furlongs brilliantly, easily beating Spangle, who joined in for the last five furlongs. AchiUedes '"was going on at tho end of soven furlongs, m which ho made decent time. All Pink shaped well over seven furlong, though King Star held her comfortably at tho finish. Fiery Cross did ;i lot of trotting in the middle, followed by a couple of circuits at half-pace. Wellwood and Vascular jumped four hurdles, giving a good exhibition. They will be schooled over the steeplechase fences later in the week, as they are intended for a trip to Southland. Winter Cherry has gone homo for a long spell, and ft. Longley -will take up Art-in her place Tho throe-year-old, has mado his reappearance, after being in retirement for somo time. A yearling filly by Birkenhead— Secret Link has been taken in hand by H. Ellis. Tho youngster is a halfsister to the Auckland two-year-old, Silver Link. A start wps mado yesterday to get tho schooling fences ready for the steeplechasers. There are not many horses to use them yet, but the fences are needed for those expected to race in early cross-country events. (By "Searchlight.") The strong nor'-wester yesterday made training operations at Addington very unpleasant, and trainers did not extend their charges. The trotting mare Ladybird has been sold to Mr J. Elvines, a steward of the Wellington Trotting Club. IVubosc has joined S. M. August's string at Islington, to be prepared for future engagements. The well-known trainer B. Jar den is at present in a private hospital, having been operated on for appendicitis. He is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. The track at Heathcote is now being treely used, and amongst those to work ; are H. Norman's pacers Rosie ■Wrift and Melisande, J. M. Woodland Rose, who raced unsuccessfully at Blenheim last week, has joined V. "Alborn's string at Addmgton, and will be raced at Timaru next -week. V. Alborn, the Reefton trainer, disposed of Invictus and Adroth after the Marlborough Meeting to.two Blenheim sportsmen.
