COTTAGE GARDEN COMPETITION.
AWARDS BY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The judging of tho cottage gardens entered for the Canterbury Horticultural Society's competition, which was to have on the lGth, but was postponed owing to tho rain, was conducted yesterday morning. In places where greenhouses were aieo included, in the cxliiuit, tlie contents were alone noted for point-getting. Exceeding trimncss and neatness distinguished the grounds of some of tho contestants, wcllcut lawns being made greatly effective by nicely inset flower beds, tjomo may have lost points by a too close adherence to the ono variety of flowers, one garden being a study in geraniums, while the aster received the bulk of another householder's attention. Tho vegetable gardens visited were outstanding feature® in the day's, tour, r-howing every evidenc© of great care and consideration in lay-out and selection. This was tho first competition under ibo auspices of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. Tho points were awarded as follow:—Usefulness and variety of vegetable crops, 20; usefulness and variety ot fruit grown, 15; variety and quality of flowers, 10; ncatnesa and general cultivation, 15; good arrangement and general effect, 35; any other noteworthy feature, 5; total, 100. Two prizes were offered of tho respective values of £2 2s, and £1 le. The entrants, who numbered seventeen, were: — Lloyd, 8., 250 Riccarton road, Christchurch. Sheriff, Mrs J.
