CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday, Mr J. C. Adams presiding. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote witli regard to the obtaining of war trophies for the Canterbury Museum, a matter brought before him bv a deputation of the Board. The Minister stated that he had communicated with the Minister of Defence, who agreed with him that the interests of provincial museums should notr be overlooked in the allocation of '.var trophies to the Dominion Museum. He thought that probably the war trophies captured by the New Zealand Division as a division would go to the Dominion Museum, but he considered it appropriate that trophies captured by units should go to the museum ot that unit's district or province. The chairman reported what iad been done in regard to the movement, and moved: "That m view of the benefits that must accrue to the middle and southern portion ot the .South Island from the completion ot tlie Otira tunnel, that this Board is of opinion that the Dominion Govei n-, ment should take immediate steps to push on the work in order that through communication by rail between A\ostland and Canterbury may be speedily completed, and that electrical power be installed for haulage through the tunnel." . , , Tho motion was carried unanimously. The Museum and Library Committed recommended that the appointment of j Mr Arthur Allison as demonstrator in j electrical engineering, at the School of j Engineering,, be approved, and tlm j the thanks of the Board be accorded to ( Mr F. N. Farris, of Samarai, New j Guinea, for his generositv in present-) ing to the Museum, through Dr. B. M. Moorhouse, a valuable collection of New Guinea curios. The report was adoptsd. The College Committee, in its ve-' port, recommended that Mr T. S. Foster, M.A., Lecturer on Education, j be granted leave of absence for six • months on account of ill-health. Mid that, subject to the approval of the Board of Education, Mr J. K. Purchase, M.A., be appointed locum tenons; that in consequence of the increased number of pupils at the Boys' High School, Mr T. W. Cane's hours be increased by six per week, and t.hat his salary be increased accordingly-; that two assistant-teachers be advertised for, for the Boys' High School, each at a salary of £2-50 per annum; that bursaries, each of tne value cf £7 10s, be awarded for the current year, to the following pupils of the Boys' High School—?T. B. Donnelly, G. *C. Crawford, H. E: Squire, aud G. AY. Cox; and that in accordance wjth the recommendation of the lady principal, exhibitions for the current vcar be awarded to the following pupils cf the Girls' High School: Geraldine Box and Elsa Reid (including boarding allowance), Minnie "Walker, and Gertrude Harris. The committee reported having granted school free places for the "second and third terms of the current year, to J. M. Willoughby and J. F. Hutchinson. monitors .-it the Boys' High School, whose senior free places expired at the end of the first term. Tho report was adopted.
